Becontree is a residential area in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, spreading across former farmland and open heath. The neighborhood features rows of connected houses, green spaces, and local shops and schools mixed throughout the streets.
Development started in 1921 as a major housing project built on empty fields and farmland. The scheme aimed to provide homes for working families and shaped the area's character for generations.
The Valence House Museum sits inside a medieval manor and displays objects from the area's past. Its collection tells the story of how ordinary people came to live and build community in this place.
The area is well served by underground rail, with a station offering regular service to central London. Visitors are best served by walking through different streets to experience the neighborhood on foot.
A forgotten detail: from 1921 to 1934, a temporary railway built specially for construction moved materials across the entire development. Once building finished, this track line vanished from the landscape completely.
