North Pier, Grade II listed pier in Blackpool, England.
North Pier is a Grade II listed structure in Blackpool, England, that reaches about 300 meters out over the Irish Sea on cast iron supports. The wooden decks lead to several pavilions, including a theater with a red dome and Victorian-style arcade halls.
Construction began in 1862 and was inaugurated the following year with an opening that drew more than 20,000 visitors to the seafront. In the decades that followed, the structure was extended several times and restored after storm damage, while keeping much of its original form.
The name refers to its location at the northern end of the promenade, where the structure serves as a meeting point for quieter entertainment. Visitors today can play arcade games or attend a theater show while enjoying views over the water.
Access is directly from the beach area, and the planks are wide enough for wheelchairs and strollers. It is best to visit in calm weather to fully enjoy the walk over the water.
In the entrance area, one of the first Sooty glove puppets is displayed, which Harry Corbett bought here in a shop. This puppet later became the star of his television show and made Blackpool an important location in the history of British children's entertainment.
