Winter Gardens, Entertainment complex and conference center in Blackpool, England
The Winter Gardens is a performing arts center and convention center in Blackpool, England, housing theaters, exhibition halls, and conference spaces that can welcome several thousand people. The twelve interconnected areas spread across a large footprint near the seafront, with each hall offering distinct design and seating arrangements.
The complex opened in 1878 as an entertainment venue and expanded over the decades with the Opera House added in 1939. A new conference building opened in 2022, representing the first major construction addition in over eighty years.
The name reflects the original purpose of offering sheltered entertainment throughout all seasons, not just summer. Today visitors experience a working venue where theater performances, dance events, and business conferences share spaces that blend heritage architecture with contemporary use.
All areas connect through indoor passageways, allowing visitors to move between halls regardless of weather conditions. Facilities include modern air conditioning, audio and video systems, and digital connectivity suited to events of different scales.
The Empress Ballroom houses a Wurlitzer organ from the nineteen thirties, one of the few surviving dance hall instruments of that era still in regular use in England. The organ is played during events, a rarity in a working venue of this kind.
