Vanguard Cave, Archaeological cave at the Rock of Gibraltar, United Kingdom
Vanguard Cave is a cave and archaeological site set within the limestone of the Rock of Gibraltar, containing multiple layers of sediment built up over a very long period. The site sits alongside other caves on the eastern face of the Rock, in an area known for its prehistoric finds.
Excavations beginning in 1989 showed that Neanderthals occupied the cave roughly between 55,000 and 28,000 years ago. The finds made here became some of the most important evidence for Neanderthal life in southern Europe.
The cave holds animal bones and simple tools left behind by its early occupants, giving a direct sense of how they hunted and prepared food. These objects help visitors understand what daily life looked like for the people who sheltered here.
Access to the cave is restricted to supervised visits in order to protect the finds still being studied on site. Sturdy footwear and a warm layer are a good idea, as the interior stays cool and damp throughout the year.
In 2021, a hidden chamber was found deep inside the cave containing a dog whelk shell that appears to have been deliberately carried in from the sea. This detail stands out because it points to intentional collecting behaviour among the cave's early occupants.
