O'Hara's Battery

O'Hara's Battery is a military fortification located at the summit of the Rock of Gibraltar with a large artillery gun installation and underground storage chambers. The site features rotating mechanisms and a series of connected chambers accessed through maintained walkways throughout the complex.

The battery was built in 1890 on the site of an earlier watchtower and upgraded with a new gun in 1901. This modernization reinforced coastal defense and control over the strait connecting the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.

The site represents British military engineering excellence, demonstrating the strategic importance of Gibraltar in controlling maritime routes between the Atlantic and Mediterranean.

Visitors can explore the site daily with access to the underground chambers and gun positions throughout the complex. It is best to wear comfortable shoes and allow time to navigate the different levels and passages.

The battery's gun could reach targets up to 29,000 yards away, and the facility now doubles as a broadcasting site for television signals across Gibraltar.
