Gorham's Cave, Sea cave in Gibraltar, United Kingdom
The limestone cave extends 100 meters in length with a 35-meter-high entrance, providing direct views of the Mediterranean Sea through its opening point.
Archaeological excavations revealed multiple occupation layers dating back 55,000 years, when the cave entrance stood 5 kilometers from the ancient shoreline.
The site contains evidence of numerous civilizations, including Neanderthals, Neolithic people, Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, and medieval Muslim populations.
Weekly boat tours depart from Marina Bay on Sunday mornings, while summer morning guided visits require advance reservations through the Gibraltar Nature Reserve.
Researchers discovered scratched lines on the cave floor dating back 39,000 years, indicating potential early forms of abstract expression by Neanderthal inhabitants.
