New St. Michael's Cave, Natural cave system in Gibraltar, United Kingdom
The cave network extends deep within the Rock of Gibraltar, featuring numerous limestone formations and a 40-yard underground lake containing 45,000 gallons of water.
Royal Engineers discovered this cave section in 1942 while creating tunnels during World War II, revealing a chamber that remained sealed for approximately 20,000 years.
The cave management shifted from military control under the Royal Engineers to civilian oversight by the Gibraltar Tourist Board in the 1970s.
Visitors can join three-hour guided tours through the cave system, with professional guides explaining geological features and natural formations throughout the journey.
The underground lake represents the final destination of guided tours, allowing participants to observe this substantial body of water within the cave system.
