Hayne's Cave Battery, Artillery battery on the western cliffs of Gibraltar.
Hayne's Cave Battery is an artillery battery on the western cliffs of Gibraltar, positioned at roughly 200 meters elevation. The installation features two gun positions with clear views across the Mediterranean and served as part of the island's broader defensive network.
The battery was built in 1788 and named after Captain Haynes, the garrison quartermaster who began construction of Queen's Road during 1787-1788. It represents one of several fortifications strengthening Gibraltar's defensive system during that period.
The battery forms part of the Gibraltar Nature Reserve, where local Berber monkeys from North Africa maintain their presence near military structures.
The battery is accessible via Royal Anglian Way, a walking route connecting several military structures across the site. Bring suitable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing as the terrain and conditions can be variable.
The cave sections of the installation were later converted into water storage facilities to support Gibraltar's drinking water needs. This practical adaptation shows how military structures were repurposed to address the island's unique challenges.
