Mediterranean Steps, Hiking trail in Upper Rock Nature Reserve, Gibraltar.
The Mediterranean Steps is a footpath with approximately 700 stone steps that climbs the eastern side of the Rock of Gibraltar. It connects different points on the mountain while passing through varied terrain with rock formations, vegetation, and wide views.
The steps were built in the early 1800s by the British military to connect military positions on the mountain. This construction was part of a larger plan to secure and control the strategically important terrain.
The path winds through areas with ancient caves that hold traces of human settlement from distant times. The location draws visitors today who appreciate how nature and history are woven together in this landscape.
The route is well marked and requires good physical fitness as it climbs steadily uphill. Comfortable hiking shoes and plenty of water are essential, and starting early is recommended to enjoy the best views.
During the climb, visitors can spot a rare wild monkey population that lives only in this part of Europe. These animals are accustomed to people, but it is important to keep a safe distance and not feed them.
