O'Hara's Tower, Military watchtower on Rock of Gibraltar, British Territory
O'Hara's Tower was a military watchtower built on the Rock of Gibraltar at a high elevation to observe distant targets. The structure occupied a prominent position near the southern edge of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.
General Charles O'Hara ordered construction of this tower in 1787 to watch Spanish naval movements across the straits. Lightning struck the tower shortly after completion, severely damaging it and leaving it in ruins for years.
The garrison named it O'Hara's Folly after discovering that the Port of Cadiz remained invisible due to intervening mountain ranges.
This site sits at elevation on the Rock, so access requires climbing and involves physical effort on steep terrain. Visitors should prepare for variable weather and bring adequate water and sturdy footwear.
The tower earned the name O'Hara's Folly when it became clear that the Port of Cadiz was not visible from this location due to intervening ridges. This discovery turned the tower into a curious failure despite its military importance.
