Arkle, Mountain summit in Sutherland, Scotland
Arkle is a mountain in Sutherland, Scotland, reaching 787 meters in elevation. Its most distinctive feature is a curved ridge of white quartzite rock that runs across the northern section of the summit.
The mountain's geological structure formed roughly 530 million years ago when Cambrian quartzite layered itself on top of ancient Lewisian gneiss. This ancient layering remains visible in the rock formations seen today.
Prince Charles created a painting of Ben Arkle in 1994, which later appeared on British postal stamps commemorating his 50th birthday.
The climb starts from a parking area near the A838 road, roughly 1.5 kilometers north of Achfary. After following an initial track, walkers encounter open moorland and rocky terrain that requires steady footing.
The peak shares its name with a celebrated Irish racehorse from the mid-20th century. Narrow sections of the ridge require careful scrambling over smooth white quartzite that can be slippery underfoot.
