Ben More, Mountain summit in Crianlarich, Scotland
Ben More is a mountain summit near Crianlarich in the Breadalbane range, distinguished by its sharp pyramid-like form rising above the surrounding terrain. The peak reaches 1,174 meters and stands out visibly from many angles across the local landscape.
The mountain has long been traversed by local communities as part of the Scottish Highland landscape. A tragic air accident in 1973 when a British European Airways test flight crashed on the slopes resulted in four fatalities, marking a significant incident for the area.
The name comes from Scottish Gaelic 'Beinn Mhòr', meaning 'the great mountain', which reflects how locals have long described this peak in their own language.
The main route starts at Benmore Farm along the A85, following a path beside Benmore Burn before ascending the northwest ridge. This walk takes several hours and requires reasonable fitness, so start early with proper gear and enough daylight remaining.
The north face holds a long-lasting snow patch called Cuidhe Chrom, marked on official maps due to how regularly it persists through early summer. This feature reveals how certain Highland locations maintain snow long after lower elevations have thawed.
