Howard Street, Pedestrian street in city centre, Sheffield, England
Howard Street is a pedestrian zone in Sheffield city centre that runs from Sheaf Square to Arundel Gate with a full granite surface. The street offers several public seating areas and provides walkway access to nearby shops and dining venues.
The street became a pedestrian zone in 2005 as part of a broader effort to improve connections to Sheffield Railway Station and reshape city centre movement. This conversion reflected a wider strategy to revitalise the downtown area.
The street contains Silverworks Gallery, which exhibits works from regional artists including Patrick Amber, Cassie Limb, and Gordie Cavill.
The surface is completely level and well-maintained, making it easy to walk and suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. A pub with restaurant service and facilities like baby changing stations and accessible entrances is located along the street.
At the upper end there is a half-amphitheatre-shaped plaza with an integrated water feature that creates a quieter setting. This space serves as a visual and functional contrast to the rest of the street.
