Sheaf Square, Public square at Sheffield Station, United Kingdom
Sheaf Square is a public plaza located directly outside Sheffield Station and serves as a gateway to the city center. The space features a large steel sculpture and cascading water features that create clear visual focal points within the paved area.
This public space was created in the mid-2000s by transforming a former car park into a pedestrian area that connects to the station. The redesign was part of a broader initiative to modernize the area around the railway station.
The square takes its name from a historic cutlery works and reflects how the city honors its steel manufacturing roots through public space. Today, visitors experience this industrial legacy expressed through contemporary design and public art.
The square is directly accessible from the railway station and fully accessible on foot for all visitors. Marked pathways lead from here toward the shopping districts and main attractions in the city center.
The steel sculpture features two contrasting surfaces with mirror polish on one side and a matte finish on the other, creating different visual effects depending on viewing angle. This dual finish gives the artwork distinct moods throughout the day as light conditions change.
