Allerton Priory, Gothic revival priory in South Liverpool, England
Allerton Priory is a Victorian residence in South Liverpool featuring high ceilings, large windows, and intricate stonework throughout its design. The building was constructed in the 1870s and has been converted into luxury apartments while keeping its original architectural character.
The building began as Allerton Lodge before architect Alfred Waterhouse redesigned it for Liverpool Mayor John Grant Morris in 1866. This redesign set the stage for its later transformation into a religious community center.
The Sisters of Providence opened a refuge for unmarried Irish girls here in 1897 and later operated it as a residential school. This charitable purpose shaped the building's role in the community for generations.
The building is limited in public access as it now functions as a private residential complex. The exterior architecture can be viewed from the street and provides a clear sense of its Victorian design.
The property served as a filming location for the Nickelodeon series House of Anubis around 2010, showcasing its distinctive architecture to international viewers. This television role brought the building wider recognition beyond Liverpool.
