Much Woolton Old School, Grade II* listed educational building in Woolton, England
Much Woolton Old School is an educational building from 1610 featuring Gothic windows and a Tudor-style arched doorway on School Lane. The structure displays the original architectural elements and craftsmanship typical of that period in northern England.
Built around 1610, this structure served the local community as its school for more than 200 years. A new schoolhouse was constructed in 1823 when student numbers grew too large for the original building.
The name comes from an old English word for a mound, referring to a medieval structure that once stood nearby. For locals, this building represents a physical link to centuries of community life and education in the area.
The building now houses a nursery and can be viewed from outside, with its architectural details clearly visible from the street. Best appreciated in daylight when the windows and entrance can be properly observed.
During the 1920s, the building faced demolition but local residents campaigned to save it from destruction. An inscription on the structure claims it as the oldest elementary school building in Lancashire, highlighting its regional importance.
