Babbs Mill Lake, lake in the United Kingdom
Babbs Mill Lake is a man-made reservoir in Kingshurst, Solihull, built to manage flooding and protect surrounding land. The reserve includes the River Cole, wildflower meadows, wooded sections, and walking paths that connect the lake, river, and grasslands.
The nature reserve was established in 1977 to mark Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee. Since then, the lake and surrounding woodland have become a refuge for wildlife, with winter visitors regularly spotting over 20 species of birds.
The park was created in 1977 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee. Today it serves as a gathering place where locals walk, picnic, and watch birds along the water and grasslands.
The site is open to pedestrians at all times, but car parks operate on seasonal schedules, closing in evening and earlier in winter than summer. Free parking is available nearby, public transport connections are close at hand, and marked trails accommodate different mobility levels.
In January 2011, more than 20 goosanders, a rare diving duck species, were spotted at the lake, showing it serves as a crucial winter refuge for migrating birds. Visitors can also spot kingfishers along the riverbank, sometimes close enough for even casual dog walkers to see them clearly.
