Sentinel, Public sculpture in Castle Bromwich, England.
Sentinel is a 16-meter-high aluminum sculpture at Spitfire Island roundabout that displays three Spitfire aircraft models rising in different directions. The models are mounted on curved steel beams and form a prominent landmark where Chester Road meets A47 Fort Parkway.
The work was unveiled in 2000 and commemorates aircraft production that took place in this area during World War II. Nearly 12,000 Spitfire aircraft were built here between 1940 and 1945 for Britain's wartime defense.
The sculpture reflects the community's connection to aviation and British heritage, shaped by local input into its design. Residents see it as a representation of their collective past and pride in industrial achievement.
The sculpture is best viewed while passing through or near the roundabout, visible from the surrounding roads. You can see it from multiple angles as you drive or walk in the area.
The design was created by Tim Tolkien, great-nephew of author J.R.R. Tolkien, who worked closely with residents during its development. A former test pilot who conducted over 37,000 test flights at the aerodrome performed the official unveiling.
