Beecroft Art Gallery, art gallery in Southend-on-Sea
Beecroft Art Gallery is an art museum in Southend-on-Sea housing more than 2000 works spanning different periods, including Old Master paintings and contemporary pieces alongside local artists. The rooms display paintings, prints, and sculptures, regularly rotating exhibitions and featuring special presentations of fashion and textiles from the town's collection.
The building was constructed many years ago and originally served a different purpose before becoming an art gallery. This transformation established it as a permanent part of the local community, and subsequent renovations have modernized the space while maintaining its historical character.
The gallery's name comes from its founder and patron who supported local artistic endeavors. Today, visitors use the space to spend quiet time with art and discover local creators, as exhibitions show how creativity remains woven into the community's daily life and identity.
The gallery is located near Southend Victoria train station, roughly a 5 to 10 minute walk away, with nearby parking and several bus routes close by. The main entrance is level, all floors are accessible by lifts, and disabled toilet facilities and parking are available to make visiting easier.
The collection includes a series of works by artist Alan Sorrell depicting scenes from Egypt before the Aswan Dam was built. Additionally, the gallery holds a group of landscape views from 1803 by artist Thorpe Smith, showing what the countryside around Southend looked like at that time.
