Barscobe Castle is a three-story stone tower house in Balmaclellan with a distinctive stair wing that rises higher than the main block. The crowstepped gables on the roof show typical features of Galloway architecture from that era.
William MacLellan constructed this listed building in 1648 using stones salvaged from the ruined Threave Castle nearby. The structure provided a country residence for local nobility during that century.
The entrance displays an armorial panel showing the MacLellan and Gordon family crests, marking the union between William MacLellan and Mary Gordon.
The castle sits near the A702 road and operates as a seasonal bed and breakfast requiring advance booking. It is best to contact ahead since availability is limited throughout the year.
The nearby Holy Linn waterfall served as a gathering place for Covenanters during religious disputes in the 17th century. This spot became an important refuge for those opposing church authority during that troubled period.
