Ironmacannie Mill, Category A listed watermill in Balmaclellan, Scotland
Ironmacannie Mill is a three-story L-shaped building with two cast iron waterwheels built from locally quarried whinstone. The structure preserves the original gearing and machinery that powered the grinding operation along Shirmers Burn.
The mill was built in the early 1600s to serve the farming estate at Kenmure Castle. It ground grain and flour for the local tenant farms until commercial operations ceased in the 1940s.
The name reflects the prominence water power held in rural Scottish life for centuries. Visitors can still see the working machinery that powered the local farming economy and shaped community life around the estate.
The building now serves as holiday accommodation for up to ten guests with bedrooms and sleeping arrangements throughout. From here you can access activities on Loch Ken and explore the surrounding countryside.
The building still generates electricity from the water source that once powered the millstones. This continuity with the same energy shows how the old mechanism remains relevant today.
