Big House, Landshipping, Country house in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
Big House in Landshipping is the ruin of a country house on the banks of the River Cleddau in Pembrokeshire, Wales. The rectangular building shows bow-fronted extensions along its long sides and a north-facing entrance once marked by a portico.
William Owen undertook a major renovation around 1830, adding a third floor and drawing inspiration from nearby Slebech Hall. Following a severe mining accident in 1844, the family lost its fortune, the estate fell into decay, and by 1922 it was considered a complete ruin.
The name reflects the social standing of the Owen family, who governed local affairs from this residence across generations. Visitors today still recognize the classical proportions of the facade, which once symbolized wealth and influence.
The ruin sits off the usual path in a wooded area, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Visitors exploring the riverside setting should come during daylight and watch for uneven ground.
Beneath the rubble, fragments of plasterwork and decorative moldings still hint at the former richness of the interiors. Old cadastral maps show that the grounds once included a small orchard, whose trees have long since vanished.
