Church of St Clement, Liverpool, Gothic Revival church in Toxteth, Liverpool, England.
The Church of St Clement is a Gothic Revival building in Toxteth featuring a seven-bay nave, a chancel with shallow canted apse, and an octagonal bell turret positioned at its west end. Cast iron columns support the interior galleries while original woodwork and decorative plasterwork remain visible throughout the structure.
The building was constructed between 1840 and 1841 by architects Arthur and George Yates Williams during Liverpool's period of rapid industrial expansion. It was established as a new parish church to serve communities in the growing city.
The interior displays three-sided galleries with cast iron supports and original wooden box pews that reflect Victorian church furnishings from the period. A ceiling decorated with painted stars creates a distinctive character throughout the nave.
The church is located on Beaumont Street and functions as an active place of worship and community gathering under the Diocese of Liverpool. Visitors should expect uneven floors and historic stairs which may present challenges for those with reduced mobility.
The two-level pulpit includes an integrated reading desk and received a replacement spiral staircase in 1892 to replace the original straight flight. This feature demonstrates how the building was adapted over time to meet changing needs.
