Cripley Meadow, Allotment site in Oxford, England
Cripley Meadow is an allotment site in Oxford situated between Castle Mill Stream and the Cotswold Line railway. The site borders Port Meadow and Fiddler's Island along the Thames, where around 260 members work over 160 active plots growing vegetables and fruit.
The land was transformed from grazing pasture into allotments in 1891 when the North Oxford and Jericho Allotments Association took it over. After decades of neglect, a restoration project beginning in 2005 brought the overgrown land back into productive use.
This site serves as a gathering place where members tend their individual plots and meet throughout the year for seasonal celebrations and events. The two heritage orchards and shared green space sit at the heart of this gardening community.
The site is accessible to visitors and new gardeners can start fairly quickly since plots regularly become available. An annually elected management committee handles the site's operations and maintenance.
The site is home to two heritage orchards that preserve rare fruit varieties and support local wildlife. These historic gardens demonstrate how traditional growing methods thrive alongside modern gardening practices.
