Davara, British steam trawler off Tory Island, Ireland
The Davara was a British steam trawler that operated off the west coast of Scotland in the early 1900s. The vessel was powered by a specialized three-cylinder engine and belonged to the Mount Steam Fishing Company based in Fleetwood.
The vessel was converted into a minesweeper for the British Navy in 1914 and served in that role until 1919 during World War I. After the war, it returned to fishing operations.
The vessel represented the British fishing industry's maritime heritage, operating regular fishing expeditions from its home port of Fleetwood throughout the early 1900s.
The wreck lies near Tory Island and is difficult to reach underwater. Visitors can learn about its story through museums and archives in the region.
On September 13, 1939, German submarine U-27 attacked the vessel with 35 rounds of fire, making it the first British trawler lost to enemy action in World War II. This event marked the beginning of the submarine threat against the British fishing fleet during the conflict.
