Enmore Castle, Grade II* listed English country house in Enmore, England
Enmore Castle is an English country house in Somerset featuring square towers at each corner and semicircular turrets positioned along the exterior walls. The building was constructed around a central courtyard and encircled by a wide moat that served as part of its defensive design.
John Perceval, 2nd Earl of Egmont, commissioned the construction of Enmore Castle between 1751 and 1755 as a substantial architectural project. The building later underwent modifications over subsequent centuries as the needs and fortunes of its residents changed.
The castle contained specialized rooms including an armory, music galleries, and a state dining room adorned with valuable tapestries from different historical periods.
The property now serves as two separate private residences and is not open to the public for interior visits. You can view the exterior architecture from nearby public pathways and enjoy the surrounding countryside on foot while respecting the residents' privacy.
The property contains extensive underground areas connected by a tunnel system that originally housed service facilities and storage spaces. These hidden structures reveal how much larger and more complex the estate's infrastructure was than what appears above ground.
