Kingsway Tunnel, road tunnel under the River Mersey, England
Kingsway Tunnel is a road tunnel beneath the Mersey River linking Liverpool and Wirral. It runs roughly 3 kilometers under the river and allows vehicles to cross quickly between the two shores without taking a long detour around the estuary.
Opened in 1971, it was then the newest major tunnel of its kind in Britain. It was built in response to growing traffic and greatly eased the burden on older crossings over the Mersey.
This crossing is part of a major road network and sees heavy daily traffic. It is best to avoid rush hours in early morning and late afternoon when congestion is at its peak.
It was excavated using explosives through slate and sandstone, a remarkable engineering feat for its era. This construction method contributed to its reputation as a 20th century engineering marvel.
