Loxley House, Georgian residential building in Wadsley, Sheffield, United Kingdom
Loxley House is a three-storey Georgian residential building with three wide bays and Venetian windows located off Ben Lane in Wadsley. The Grade Two Listed structure was acquired by Campbell Homes in 1996 and converted into luxury flats and apartments.
The building was constructed in 1826 by the Payne family, replacing an earlier structure from 1795 owned by Reverend Thomas Halliday. This succession of buildings across the site spans more than a century of development.
The house was home to William Clegg, who played football for Sheffield Wednesday before pursuing a career in city politics. His time there connects the place to local sporting and public service history.
The building sits in a residential area and is clearly visible from the street, though it has been converted into private residential units. Visitors should note that only the exterior facade can be viewed, as the interior is now private accommodation.
Doctor Henry Payne, the final family owner, was buried in an unmarked brick vault within the house following his death in 1895. This unusual burial resulted from a local dispute and makes the property distinctly memorable.
