Menstrie Castle, Category A listed fortified house in Clackmannanshire, Scotland
Menstrie Castle is a three-storey tower house arranged in an L-shape with stepped gables and a corner turret featuring gun ports. The fortified residence stands in the Clackmannanshire countryside and holds protection as a Category A listed structure.
The castle served as the birthplace of Sir William Alexander in 1567, who later founded the colony of Nova Scotia and established a new baronetcy system. His overseas settlement plans were directly tied to this Scottish holding and marked a significant venture into colonial enterprise.
Inside, painted armorials represent 109 baronetcies alongside portraits of 17th century figures from Scottish nobility and colonial ventures. The display shows how this place connected local society to broader political and overseas expansion.
The castle opens to visitors during the warmer months when guided tours and room viewing are available. Visitors should plan ahead since opening times are limited and best confirmed in advance of a visit.
Two rooms within the castle are set up for self-catering stays, allowing guests to sleep overnight in this historic tower house. This rare arrangement lets visitors experience a night in a protected listed building rather than simply touring it.
