Milecastle 3, Roman fortification on Hadrian's Wall, England
Milecastle 3 is a small Roman fortification on Hadrian's Wall with stone walls enclosing a central roadway and barracks for soldiers. The structure features gateways and internal spaces designed for a small military garrison to carry out their daily duties.
This fortification was built in the 2nd century as part of Hadrian's defensive frontier system. Archaeological work beginning in the 1800s has slowly revealed its layout and daily life of those stationed there.
This outpost served as a watchtower where Roman soldiers kept guard over the frontier. It represents how Rome managed its border through a network of small fortified posts spaced at regular intervals.
The site is accessible via the Hadrian's Wall Path and can be visited during daylight hours. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as the ground is uneven and some remains are low to the ground.
Excavation revealed a Roman cooking oven in the southeast corner of the structure. Adjacent observation towers also contained burial remains from around the 2nd century, offering clues about the soldiers who lived here.
