Lothian and Borders, Judicial district in southeastern Scotland
Lothian and Borders is a judicial district in southeastern Scotland covering Edinburgh, Scottish Borders, East Lothian, West Lothian, and Midlothian. The sheriffdom operates court buildings across four main towns that handle legal cases and civil matters for the region.
The sheriffdom was established in 1975 following a major reorganization that reduced twelve separate Scottish judicial districts into six modern sheriffdoms. This consolidation streamlined court operations across the southeastern region.
The Sheriff Principal, appointed by the King upon recommendation from the First Minister, leads the judicial operations with support from qualified sheriffs across four courts.
People can access legal services at sheriff courts in Edinburgh, Jedburgh, Livingston, and Selkirk across the region. Justice of the Peace Courts in each area handle straightforward cases and offer additional support for residents.
The sheriffdom maintains specific judicial orders and practice notes that guide legal procedures within its southeastern Scottish jurisdiction.
