Llyn Arenig Fawr, reservoir in the United Kingdom

Llyn Arenig Fawr is a large mountain reservoir in Gwynedd, Wales, surrounded by steep green hills and holding calm, reflective water. It sits on open access land and is reached by a walking path that climbs gradually from a parking area about two kilometers away along a well-maintained trail.

The reservoir was built many decades ago to supply water to surrounding communities and remains part of an active water network serving local towns and villages. The nearby mountain Arenig Fawr holds a memorial at its summit marking a wartime aircraft crash from 1943 that claimed eight lives.

The reservoir sits in a remote farming area where sheep graze regularly on the surrounding hillsides. Visitors encounter this working landscape as part of their walk and are asked to keep dogs on leads to respect the animals and the pastoral way of life here.

Plan your visit for good weather since mountain conditions change quickly and waterproof jackets, warm layers, a map, and compass are essential. Park your vehicle at the designated area on the minor road and follow the marked walking path that takes about one and a half to two hours to reach the reservoir, bringing water and snacks along the way.

This site receives fewer visitors than busier spots in the region, making the mountain paths quiet and peaceful where you can listen to the wind and enjoy wide views without crowds. The remote feeling and sense of solitude in the mountains draws those seeking an authentic mountain experience away from popular trails.
