Millennium Tower, Unfinished skyscraper project at St Mary Axe, London, United Kingdom
Millennium Tower is an unfinished skyscraper project at St Mary Axe in London designed by Foster and Partners. The building was to feature two asymmetrical ellipses connected to each other, rising to 386 meters tall with 92 floors.
The project came about following the 1992 IRA bombing of the Baltic Exchange, when Foster and Partners designed this tower as a replacement building. The plan ultimately failed due to objections from Heathrow Airport authorities about potential interference with flight paths.
The media response to the building's form led newspapers, including The Guardian, to label the structure as an alternative version of a vegetable.
The site cannot be visited as construction never began and the location has been developed differently since then. The area remains easy to reach by public transport and is within the main business district of the city.
Newspapers like The Guardian humorously described the design as vegetable-like, which drew significant media attention to the proposal. This unconventional shape and public reaction to it made the project one of the most debated architectural designs of its era.
