North Norfolk Railway, Heritage railway in Norfolk, England
The North Norfolk Railway is a heritage line running between Sheringham and Holt in eastern Norfolk, passing through gentle hills and farmland. The route follows preserved tracks parallel to the coast and offers views across fields and wooded areas.
The railway line began operating in the late 19th century and served regular passenger traffic along the coast for over five decades. After closure in the 1960s, it was reopened by enthusiasts and has since been run using steam locomotives.
Local families often visit the stations on weekends to see historic locomotives up close and take part in themed weekend events. Volunteer staff wearing period uniforms share their passion for railway history with visitors.
All three stations along the route offer toilets and refreshment facilities, with wheelchair access available at the platforms. The journey takes roughly half an hour between the endpoints and works well for a half-day outing.
Some of the trains still run on coal, allowing visitors to watch the fireman shoveling fuel during the journey. The line passes through a nature reserve where deer and various bird species are often visible from the tracks.
