Phoenix United Mine, Copper and tin mine in Cornwall, England.
Phoenix United Mine is a copper and tin mining site near the village of Minions on the southeastern edge of Bodmin Moor. The grounds span roughly 30 hectares and still feature a distinctive square stone chimney rising from the moorland.
Mining operations began in 1836 under the name Cornwall Great United Mines, then changed hands in 1842 when James Seccombe bought the site and renamed it. This ownership shift marked the start of a new era that continued well into the 20th century.
The site speaks to Cornwall's industrial past, when hundreds of workers extracted copper and tin using labour-intensive methods throughout the 19th century. Visitors today can trace this working heritage in the remaining structures and how the land is arranged.
The grounds are situated on common land near Minions village and remain accessible to visitors who want to explore the remaining mining structures. Wear sturdy footwear, as the moorland terrain is uneven and can be boggy in places.
The site harbours the rare Cornish path moss, a tiny plant that grows only here and in one other location worldwide. This unusual occurrence makes the place particularly valuable for botanists and nature enthusiasts.
