Prospect Park, Reading, Urban park and country house in Reading, England
Prospect Park is an urban park in the west of Reading, England, made up of open grass areas, meadows, and several sports facilities spread across the grounds. At its highest point stands the Mansion House, a Georgian country house finished in white stucco and listed as Grade II.
The Mansion House was built in the late 1700s by a man who took a new surname after inheriting his uncle's estate, using the property to establish his standing in local society. The park was later acquired by the town and opened to the public during the 19th century.
The Mansion House now serves as a restaurant where visitors can eat inside the original rooms of the old country house. On weekends and warm days, the park fills with people playing sports, walking dogs, and gathering on the grass.
The park is open throughout the year and can be visited on foot, with paths connecting the main areas across the grounds. Sporting facilities are spread out but easy to find, and the Mansion House sits at the top of a gentle slope that is visible from most parts of the park.
A miniature steam train run by volunteer model engineers operates periodically near the park, and it is one of the few such attractions in the area. The locomotive works on traditional steam principles and is maintained entirely by enthusiast volunteers.
