Putney Pier, pier at Putney Embankment
Putney Pier is a landing stage on the Thames in Putney where river boats pick up and drop off passengers. The structure consists of an open area with a metal railing made of lattice ironwork, accessible from the street via a ramp.
The pier was built in the late 1800s and has connected the community to the river network ever since. Its role as a key stopping point has proven itself over more than a century.
The pier is closely connected to the famous race between Oxford and Cambridge, which starts here each year. The area becomes lively during the race when spectators gather to cheer on the rowers and enjoy the event.
The pier is well served by buses on routes 22, 265, 378, and 485, and Putney Bridge tube station is about a nine-minute walk away. On site, ticket machines accept contactless and Oyster card payments, and bike rentals are available nearby.
The pier sits right beside the starting point of the famous eights race between Oxford and Cambridge, where thousands of spectators watch the race from here each year. Visitors often spot rowers preparing for competitions or can observe the historic rowing course.
