Putney Sculpture Trail, Sculpture trail along River Thames in Putney, England
The Putney Sculpture Trail features nine near life-sized human figures positioned along the southern bank of the Thames. The works stretch approximately one mile between Leaders Gardens and Prospect Quay, passing through public spaces including Wandsworth Park and Putney Wharf riverside.
The first sculpture called Load was installed in 1989, beginning this riverside art project. Eight additional pieces were added during the summer of 2008, completing the current ensemble.
British sculptor Alan Thornhill created each figure to invite personal interpretation rather than impose specific meanings. The works speak to themes of human experience that visitors encounter along their walk.
The sculptures are accessible via walking paths along the southern Thames riverbank that connect with the surrounding park areas. Wear comfortable footwear since the trail covers the entire stretch and includes varied ground surfaces throughout.
The figures bear titles such as Exodus, Horizontal Ambiguity, and Motherfigure, each representing different human themes. These titles offer clues to the artistic ideas without imposing a single interpretation on visitors.
