Portrack Incinerator, Nature reserve in County Durham, England
The Portrack Meadows Wildlife Reserve features networks of footpaths through native trees, plants, and hedgerows where various bird species nest.
The site transformed from a municipal waste incinerator, operational from 1975 to 1996, processing 200,000 tonnes of waste annually from four local authorities.
The reserve includes interpretation boards and the public sculpture 'Germination' commissioned in 2005 to recognize the land's transformation.
The northern section contains cleared pathways, parking facilities, and educational areas managed by the Tees Valley Wildlife Trust.
Concrete foundations of the former incinerator remain on site, creating dense vegetation patterns and supporting new ecological habitats.
