Portrack Marsh Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Stockton-on-Tees, United Kingdom.
Portrack Marsh Nature Reserve is a protected area in Stockton-on-Tees located between the Tees Barrage and Tees Viaduct. It covers about 50 acres of wetlands, ponds, and marshes stretching along the northern bank of the River Tees.
The reserve occupies land from a former river meander that was altered in 1830 when Portrack Cut was created to improve navigation along the river. This change to the waterway eventually allowed the area to become protected habitat.
The reserve functions as a learning place where students and researchers study wetland ecosystems and observe numerous bird species throughout the year. Local schools and nature enthusiasts regularly visit to discover the area's wildlife and connect with the river environment.
The site is accessible through compact gravel paths and a paved cycleway, with free parking available at the car park off Whitewater Way. Walking routes are easy to follow and take you through different parts of the wetland.
This is the final remaining wetland on the lower Tees and uses specialized methods like introducing weevils to control invasive water plants. This hands-on approach shows how natural processes can help manage the habitat.
