Possil Marsh, Wildlife reserve in Glasgow City, Scotland.
Possil Marsh is a wildlife reserve in Glasgow with a shallow freshwater loch at its heart, surrounded by wetland habitats including marsh, swamp, fen, willow scrub, and grassland. These different zones create spaces where water birds and aquatic life can thrive.
This area was once part of an extensive network of lochs and wetlands across West Central Scotland, drastically reduced over centuries through drainage and land reclamation. The reserve now protects one of the remaining fragments of that former landscape.
The Scottish Wildlife Trust manages educational programs at Possil Marsh, teaching students about wetland ecology and environmental conservation principles.
The reserve can be reached via the Forth and Clyde towpath, with free parking available near the old Lambhill Stables building. Wear waterproof boots when visiting in wet weather, as the ground can be muddy and soft.
A meteorite fell at this spot in 1804, giving the marsh geological significance beyond its natural value. A marker commemorates this rare cosmic event in the middle of the Glasgow landscape.
