Shewalton House and estate

Shewalton House and estate, Historic estate in North Ayrshire, Scotland.

Shewalton House is a Georgian mansion in North Ayrshire with two hipped roof bays on each side of a recessed central area. The structure featured a subterranean ground floor and two upper levels, accompanied by extensive walled gardens that overlooked the River Irvine.

The estate was originally held by the Fullarton family and later passed to the Wallace family around 1545. Subsequent ownership transferred to the Earl of Glasgow, who controlled the property and its extensive lands.

The gardens of the estate incorporated whale bones that were discovered where Annick Water meets the River Irvine. The ribs were repurposed as decorative archways throughout the grounds, creating an unusual feature visitors could observe.

The property included Shewalton Mains Farm and three entrance drives with lodges serving as gatehouses. Visitors should be aware that the grounds were extensive and the estate contained multiple functional areas spread across the landscape.

Local weavers in Irvine repurposed vertebrae from the whale skeleton as weights for their looms, linking a natural discovery to the textile trade. This connection shows how the estate's findings integrated with the industrial life of the surrounding community.
