Southport Zoo, Animal park in Southport, England
Southport Zoo was a six-acre animal park in northwest England that housed more than 150 species across specialized enclosures. Visitors could see African lions, chimpanzees, gibbons, parrots, and reptiles arranged throughout the grounds.
Frank and Helena Farrar established the site in 1953 as a small animal collection that expanded significantly over the following decade with breeding initiatives. The operation closed in 2004 when the local council chose not to renew the lease agreement.
The zoo participated in educational initiatives, providing resources for teachers and organizing workshops about wildlife conservation and animal behavior.
The grounds were straightforward to navigate with multiple pathways connecting the different animal areas. Visitors could move through at their own pace to view the various enclosures and exhibits throughout the day.
Two residents named Chiefy the leopard and Rajah the lion appeared in several film productions during the 1950s. These animals gained recognition through their roles in motion pictures of that era.
