Stadthaus, Tall wooden apartment building in Hoxton, United Kingdom.
The Stadthaus is a residential building in London constructed entirely from cross-laminated timber panels that reach 29 meters across nine floors. The wooden panels form the complete structural skeleton and carry all loads just like a traditional steel framework would.
The building was completed in 2009 and was the first large residential tower in London built entirely from timber. It proved that this construction method could work in a modern city and opened the door for similar timber projects that followed.
The building shows how modern residential spaces in London are designed with environmental thinking in mind. Visitors can see how wood construction works in a dense urban neighborhood where space is limited and natural materials matter.
The entrance sits in the lively heart of Hoxton where streets are walkable and several tram and bus routes pass nearby. The building itself is clearly visible to pedestrians and stands out from surrounding structures because of its wooden appearance.
The structure stores significant amounts of carbon within its timber framework, meaning the material itself has captured carbon from the atmosphere. This carbon storage is one of the main reasons why timber construction can be so beneficial for the climate.
