Sunderland Empire Theatre, Historic theatre in Sunderland, England.
The Sunderland Empire Theatre features a traditional red and gold auditorium with detailed architectural elements designed by Frank Matcham in the Edwardian period.
The theatre opened its doors on July 1, 1907, when Vesta Tilley declared the establishment open after laying its foundation stone in September 1906.
The venue presents numerous West End productions, ballets, concerts, and theatrical performances throughout the year, maintaining its status as northeast England's primary entertainment center.
Located at 4-5 High Street West, the theatre provides 2,200 seats across multiple levels and offers numerous dining options, including the Pizza Al Teatro restaurant.
Actor Sid James experienced his final moments on this theatre's stage during a performance of The Mating Season in April 1976.
