The venue combines a traditional museum with a glass-enclosed garden containing hundreds of plants and educational exhibits about local natural history.
The museum opened in 1846 and was the first municipally funded museum in England outside London, later adding the Winter Gardens in 2001.
The galleries display local art, natural sciences, and industrial heritage collections, including items from Sunderland's maritime and glass-making past.
Located near Sunderland Metro station, the museum opens Monday through Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00 and Sundays from 14:00 to 17:00.
The Winter Gardens contain a 30-foot-tall tree fern that grows through multiple levels of the glass structure.
