Sunderland Civic Centre, Administrative building in Sunderland, England
The Sunderland Civic Centre is an administrative building with two connected hexagonal structures arranged along a north-south axis. The building is defined by red brick walls and continuous bands of glazing throughout.
The building replaced the aging Town Hall in 1970 and marked a turning point in the city's administrative needs. Its opening represented the move toward a modern facility designed for contemporary governance.
The entrance hall features a stained glass window by Dan Savage that remembers the miners' strike anniversary and its impact on the region. This artwork reflects how the building connects to the community's past.
The building is accessible on weekdays during business hours and provides various municipal services to residents. Its central location makes it easy to reach by foot or public transport.
Metal curtains at the windows were inspired by design elements from the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York. This unusual choice gives the building a distinctive and modern look.
