The Sunderland Civic Centre spans 191,000 square feet, featuring two connected hexagonal structures arranged along a north-south axis with red brick and continuous glazing.
The centre opened in November 1970 after Princess Margaret inaugurated the £3.4 million building, replacing the former Town Hall that became inadequate in the 1960s.
The entrance to the council chamber displays a stained glass window created by Dan Savage, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the UK miners' strike.
The facility operates Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 6 PM, offering housing assistance, employment support, and benefits services to Sunderland residents.
Metal curtains adorn the windows throughout the building, drawing inspiration from the design elements of the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York.
