Sunderland, Metropolitan city in Tyne and Wear, England.
Sunderland is a city at the mouth of the River Wear, stretching along the North Sea coast with two main beaches called Seaburn and Roker. The city connects old harbor districts along the river with modern residential areas spread across gentle hills.
Three separate settlements called Monkwearmouth, Bishopwearmouth and Sunderland grew together over centuries before they were officially united. The city received its status in 1992 after evolving from a maritime trading port into a modern center.
The National Glass Centre shows daily how craftsmen turn molten material into vessels and sculptures, using techniques known in the region for centuries. Visitors can watch the masters at work as they stand by the furnace and shape the glowing mass.
The university runs two campuses where students from different countries enroll throughout the year, and both are easy to reach from the residential areas. Public areas around the beaches and riverfront remain freely accessible to visitors.
The museum houses Wallace, a preserved lion from the 19th century, displayed alongside ceramic collections and paintings by L.S. Lowry. This lion was originally kept in a circus and later moved into the museum collection.
