Wentworth Estate, Gated residential estate in Virginia Water, England
Wentworth Estate is a gated residential community in Runnymede, Surrey, spread across roughly 2.7 square miles of woodland. The property features large houses and private roads laid out across heavily wooded grounds.
Developer W.G. Tarrant acquired the land in 1922 and hired golf architect Harry Colt to design a golf course around the existing Wentworth house. The estate subsequently developed into a major residential community with ongoing expansion over the decades.
The houses display a wide range of architectural styles from the 1930s onward, including Arts and Crafts villas and Neo-Georgian designs. Walking through the grounds, you can see how these different architectural approaches sit side by side and shape the character of the area.
The estate has direct connections to Camberley and the M3 motorway, while nearby Virginia Water and Longcross stations serve the London Waterloo line. Keep in mind this is a private community, so access is restricted and it is wise to check ahead before visiting.
During World War II, the estate contained an underground bunker system that served as a military command center until December 1944. This hidden military past remains undocumented in the landscape, but it forms an important part of the site's wartime history.
