Runnymede spans across residential areas and water meadows along the River Thames, with Addlestone serving as its administrative center.

The district, formed in 1974 from the merger of Chertsey and Egham urban districts, received borough status in 1978.

Runnymede maintains international connections through town twinning partnerships with Bergisch Gladbach in Germany, Herndon in Virginia, and Joinville-le-Pont in France.

The M25 motorway provides direct access to the borough through junctions at Chertsey and Egham, while South Western Railway operates regular train services.
